Local, state and federal fair housing laws provide protection from discrimination in housing based on a person belonging to a “protected class.” Housing discrimination occurs when individuals or families receive different treatment because they belong to a "protected class".

Protected classes are: race or color, religion, country of origin, gender, ancestry, familial status (families with children), marital status, age (except legally designated senior communities), physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, and source of income (such as TANF or SSI).
